Description

Fountain Estate lies in the hills beyond Basseterre, at approximately 350 ft above sea level. Constructed on the foundations of the De Poincy Chateau (Chateau de la Montagne), which was built in the 1640’s and regarded as one of the finest houses in the Caribbean, Fountain Estate is truly a property with an amazing history. De Poincy was the first on the island to introduce sugar production, and had a road that connected the Chateau (a three level castle) to a sugar estate. In 1690, upon De Poincy’s passing, the Chateau was passed into the hands of the Order of St. John, but was probably destroyed in an earthquack of 1689. The fountain and brickwork can still be seen today, including what is said to be a garden alter. Under the Treaty of Utrecht (1713) St. Kitts was retained by Britain, and the history continues with ownership in the hands of General Walter Hamilton, his widow Dame Francis Stapleton and further successfully connected families. Sometime after 1964 the estate, the existing three bedroom, two bathroom home which stands on the 2+ acre grounds, was passed into the hands of the estate manager.
